Guest Post/Virtual Tour - Nicole Weaver

Inspiration behind Marie and her Friend the Sea Turtle by Nicole Weaver

I decided to write about sea turtles because as a little girl I lived on the beach near a nesting site. The idea to write the book came after I attended a writer’s conference. The guest speaker suggested that an author should write about personal experiences. I never did forget the day my father ordered the maid to make soup out of the turtle he and my uncle had captured. My heart broke in two. I remember being very obstinate. I refused to eat any of the soup.

There are laws in place to help protect sea turtles and their eggs. I am very happy about that. Unfortunately, there are no laws in place in a third world country like Haiti.

In college I majored in Spanish and French. As a veteran teacher of French and Spanish, I thought it would be a good idea to write the manuscript in English, French and Spanish. The book can be used in a science classroom to introduce the topic of saving and protecting sea turtles. A foreign language teacher will find the book very useful to introduce students to French or Spanish.

A social studies teacher can use the book to teach Caribbean culture and languages that are spoken in a particular country or region.

Lastly, Marie and her friend the Sea Turtle can be used to teach children about compassion, family, love and devotion.

Read an excerpt ~
She stopped, peered down, and noticed it was a huge sea turtle. Her heart thumped, ba-boom, ba-boom, as she gently stroked the sea turtle.
