Many people have done Random Acts of Kindness, bestowing some kind of gift on a stranger, but only I do what I call my Random Acts of Divineness. There are global movements and Facebook groups that embrace doing something spontaneous or unexpected for a complete stranger and anyone who has been on either the giving or receiving end can tell you it's a wonderful experience.
I love giving gifts. Even to complete strangers. Sometimes I do this anonymously. Sometimes I am inspired by meeting someone for the first time. The Divineness comes into play when I decide to give them one of my novels―and I know instinctively which one they need to read. That's often what it's about for me. What someone else needs to read or learn or think about. Random Acts of Divineness is what I think of when synchronicity and serendipity come calling and put me in a particular situation with someone special.
This name I came up with was inspired by my suspense thriller Divine Intervention and by the word "divineness", which means "sacred", "holy", "spiritual". What amazes me is that I am presented with moments to engage in my Random Acts of Divineness and these bring me such great pleasure. I believe we are all led to meet the people we meet. We just have to be open to meeting them.
The other day my husband and I stopped at a stranger's house. They had a hot tub in the backyard and we wanted to see how they raised it. We didn't know them; they just happen to live on the street where we're building our new house. So I dragged my husband to the front door and I knocked.
It was answered by Roseann, a woman who runs a house sitting business. It wasn't her house. I explained about the hot tub and she allowed us to come in and check it out in the backyard. After a few minutes of talking to her, we discovered that the hot water had shut off in the house and she didn't know how to fix it. My husband is Mr. Fix-It, so I volunteered his services.
While he worked on that, I visited with Roseann, found out she was going to college to become a career counsellor and not once did we discuss books. It was a great visit and upon leaving I'd decided to give her a book, but wasn't sure what she'd enjoy. I couldn't judge by the house as it wasn't hers and I didn't know enough about her to even know if she even liked reading. But Divineness stepped in.
On the stairs by the front door, I saw Dean Koontz's book Velocity and commented on it. She immediately said she loved suspense. A-ha! I'd give her The River! But there was something about her that made me reach for a copy of Whale Song I found at the bottom of my bin when I went out to my car to get her a book.
I went back to the house with both books signed and in hand and gave them to her. Roseann seemed confused at first. Then I told her I was the author. The look she gave me was indescribable. Amazement bordering on disbelief maybe. Then she shared a dream she had―to write a book. She shared that she always made notes, but had no idea how to start or where to start.
Divine Intervention? I'd say. Random Acts of Divineness? Definitely.
