Saturday Spotlight

Welcome to my new meme….Saturday Spotlight, where each week we will have a chance to showcase something new.  It will be the place to gather, talk and shine the “spotlight” on all things book related.  Not to mention a place to discover new to us authors, characters, series and places.

Each week I will pick a new theme for us to share our favorite of, and every once in a while I’ll make it a “readers choice” week where you can spotlight whatever you want.

Some of the different things we’ll be spotlighting are our favorite book, author, female/male character, location, murder weapon, series, other book blogs, giveaway sites, places to get our books and just about anything else book related.

For our first week I thought we should spotlight OURSELVES!!!  I think it will be great way to introduce ourselves to each other and find out a little bit about each other, what we like to read, and how we got started blogging.

So, about me.......I’m 39 years old and I live in Massachusetts. I work for my family’s business. I’ve got 3 beautiful nieces and a Maltese puppy named Sadie.  I've always been an avid reader. For as long as I can remember I've never been without a book in my hands, in my handbag, on my bedside table or in my car.  I love to read.  It's what I do for fun, to relax, to escape.

I love to read mysteries/thrillers, romantic suspense, contemporary fiction, cozies, woman's fiction, and legal thrillers. I used to be a big romance reader as well, but that fell by the way side.

Four years ago I found a great site - Paperback Swap.  For anyone looking to get rid of old books and find new ones, this is the place for you!  You offer up a book for trade. When someone requests your book, you mail it to them (via media mail which is the cheapest way to mail).  Once the receiver gets your book, you earn a credit. With that credit you can than order one of the millions of books that have been posted by other members. That’s it – easy peasy. Not only will you find books you want, but a whole new world of other genres will be opened up for you. I never knew what a cozy was, and now I’m hooked!  During my time on PBS I made some amazing friends.  Friends who were always looking to me for some great book recommendations.  They even started calling  me “The Book Pimp” and urged me to start a book blog.  Who me? Sure….. Will what I have to say actually persuade someone to read this book? Does anyone actually care about what I have to say about the books I read?   I guess some people do and I thank those of you who follow me and who have visited my site regularly.  Lori’s Reading Corner started off as a little place for me to share with my FRIENDS the books I’ve read and it’s gotten bigger than I could have ever expected or hoped for.

So thank you to those that urged me to write this blog, the friends that continue to encourage me, the authors, publishers, publicists and others who think enough of me to send me your books to read, review and “pimp.”  I appreciate all of you!

Now…..tell me about you. How did you get started in the blogging world?

DISCLAIMER:
(Stolen from the lovely Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books – thank you!)

The Spotlight isn't just for you to throw your link in there and not visit any other blogs.  It's all about networking and finding new blogs that are of interest.  So, in the spirit of the Spotlight, try to make some time to visit other blogs and don't post your link if you are not planning on visiting other blogs during the week.  This is a weekly event, so if you don't have time this week, that's fine!  Hopefully we'll see you next week!

If you sign MckLinky, make sure to leave a link to YOUR Spotlight post & please share the love and POST ABOUT THE SPOTLIGHT ON YOUR BLOG!  How else will anyone else find out about it and come join the fun?

Lori, it was nice to learn a bit more about you. I have had good success with Paperback Swap as well. It's been a while since I used it, but I think I ought to get back to passing on some of my books. Have a good weekend!

What a great meme and idea !!!
Hi..My name is Cheryl, am 54 (shhh don't tell anyone), live in RI, married 29 yrs and have 2 great sons. "Mash" is a nickname that I received from my coworkers before becoming disabled. It is the beginning of how my last name is pronounced. I have always been an avid reader as far back as I can remember. A book is always by my side or I feel naked. Suspense/Mystery have always been my favorite genre with a few contemporary Romance and Lit thrown in. In September, I stumbled onto a book blog, which I didn't even know existed. From there I clicked on the blogroll lists and found many more book blogs. I was inspired to create a blog (a miracle since I am computer challenged), which was going to be a "personal journal" as to my reading but the more I read on the book blogs, the more I wanted to become involved as it looked like so much fun. In December I started accepting requested reviews and as they say...the rest is history. When I saw the premise for this meme, I had to join. Am hoping to meet new bloggers and to better get to know the bloggers I follow.

Great Idea Lori!!!
I met Lori, the Book Pimp, lol at Paperbackswap and she has been such a good friend to me even though we have never met in person. She and Wendy (The Minding Spot), another PBS friend, are the ones who got me started blogging. Back in 2001 I was left with my right side paralyzed after car accident and become more depressed than I was before. Some time later I rediscovered my love for reading to replace all the other hobbies I could no longer do. Searching the internet one day I found Paperbackswap and the Bookworm Hangout (An old MSN Group)and a bunch of wonderful online friends. I also started getting out of the house twice a week to work as the treasurer at our church. I even taught myself code so I could create and maintain the church's web site. All was great in the world, until last April when I lost my job at church and the web site. (Long story about one man who decided he knew what was better for me that anyone else.) Anyway, this caused stress in the household because of the loss of income, but it put me in a place I never want to go again, not even my new grandson could brighten my day enough to barely get out of bed. Months went by where I sat at this computer or just laid in bed reading and sleeping. Then last November I really started reading Lori's and Wendy's blogs and started asking them questions and was probably a real pest. After the worst Christmas ever (my mom had died last year too) I sat down at this computer on December 31 and started Dollycas's Thoughts and have never looked back. I love writing by blog, promoting books, sharing my thoughts and "meeting" new people. The authors and the books are like Christmas presents, better than any amount of money.

My family has their wife, mother, grandmother, sister back. I have a wonderful husband, 2 fantastic sons, 2 beautiful daughters,1 terrific daughter in law, 1 awesome grandson, the best mother-in-law on the planet, and some great brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews, inlaws and outlaws and some truly amazing friends. It was a miracle that I survived that accident and it was truly a gift from God and everyone mentioned above that I become a blogger.

Thank you Lori.
Love Dollycas aka Lori C.

Hi Lori. Beautiful blog you have here! Thank you for sharing the Paperback Swap info. I will head over there for sure. I am a mom who loves to read, especially mysteries. My latest fave is by Mike Hogan called, "The Ovary Wars," which I couldn't put down it was so intriguing. You should check it out!
